Safety Measures Before you can begin working on a lawn mower, stabilize it so it doesn't move, and take precautions to prevent the mower from starting and the blades from engaging. This is necessary when disassembling any part of a lawnmower, but it is especially important when working directly with the mower deck. Place the mower on a level surface with the parking brake engaged and blocks placed behind the wheels to keep the lawnmower from rolling. Push down on the mower engagement lever to the 'O' position to disengage the mower blades. Turn off they key and remove it from the ignition switch. Pull the spark plug wire off of the spark plug as an extra measure to prevent accidental starting. Front Preparation The riding mower cutting deck wheels must be turned to face in the direction you wish to remove the mower deck.
Pull the locking pin from the wheel shaft by hand or with needle-nose pliers. Rotate the riding mower cutting deck wheel 90-degrees; push the locking pin into the wheel shaft. Lower the riding mower deck cutting height to the lowest position. Push down on the mower cutting deck lift lever to lower the riding mower cutting deck on hydraulic lift assist models. Push forward on the lift pedal with your foot. Rear Preparation Pull and rotate the J-pin that holds the rear draft arm to the riding mower cutting deck bracket to release the rear of the mower cutting deck from the tractor frame. The J-pins are located on top rear of the riding mower cutting deck.
It may be necessary to raise the riding mower cutting deck slightly to relieve pressure off of the J-pins. Locate the front draft rods on the front of the riding mower frame where they connect to the draft brackets. Then pull the locking clip from the front draft rods with needle-nose pliers.
John Deere X540 Engine Problems
Using your hands, slide the front draft rods out of the draft brackets. Removing the Mower Deck After preparing the front and rear of the mower deck, taking the deck off the mower is fairly simple.
Raise the draft arms up to the transport position, and slide the riding mower cutting deck out from under the riding tractor frame. If you don't have a helper on hand to raise the mower for you, a simple car jack works well for lifting the mower to give enough clearance to slide the cutting deck out of place. Grasp the mower deck only, avoiding the cutting blades so you don't accidentally cut your fingers on the sharp blades.
